another day, another city
to fly to in the morning
though there’s a small hiccup
and i have to hotfoot it
to the other end of the airport
then, after checking in,
I spill coffee
down my nice shirt
and discover that the flight
has been delayed
but once we’re finally on board
things start to look up.
so after I finish plugging a few cables
into a few boxes »
it was just a shirt
but the first of many
i’d buy
from that particular
label
over the last eight years
it had a certain
minimal style and grace
something their more recent
products
have lacked
with their garish mish-mash
of colors and shapes
(though i did find one
old-style shirt recenly –
tellingly, i found it at
their seconds store)
so when we grabbed
our six bags of old clothes »
on the way there
we waited for take off
as a small aircraft
landing from the left
touched down effortlessly
with a small puff of smoke
from beneath the wheels
and we got moving
a new office
(for me)
another unfamiliar setup
another messy machine room
to make sense of.
hours later
the job done
we wait for take off
as a small plane
lands from the left
life repeats itself »
I’ve been lost in a sea
of old documents:
– farewell cards
both from grade 6
and my first job
– old printouts
like a list of samples
from skinny puppy tracks
and what film they came from
it was one of the first things
I found on the net
somewhere in the early 90s
– an old, old, diary
with a 5 year gap in it
– manuals for devices »
on the first working day
of this home-loan lifestyle
i hopped on the tram
a line i used to take
a couple of years ago
and sat down
in an empty seat
opposite a girl
all dressed up in
red wool
to ward off the cold
she looked at me
and smiled
and i wondered
about the last time
anybody randomly smiled at me
just like that
later
as i hopped off the tram »
