i can’t remember the last time
i went to St Kilda
once upon a time
i went there almost every weekend
but when i moved across town
i changed my habits
and so my regular places
became new ones on this side
to match my new life
as it were

just for once
we hopped on a tram
all the way through town
there were fancier intersections
and lots of wooden stuff
down by the beach
some shops had changed
i suppose
but really
it all felt like
a closed door
that didn’t need to be opened.

new years day I’m walking down Fitzroy St in Fitzroy, when I stop...
west the country sped by in all its dusted brown...
lunchtime kororoit creek road stretched out in front of us...

after my second game of tennis
in a very long time
i lay down for a nap
while strange music played
and i drifted away
on a strange little boat
vanishing into mist
with voices surrounding
my confused, tired body.

later, the album finished
a familiar bassline marked a change in tack
i found myself dragged mercilessly
from the loving waves
and back into our brightly coloured sofa.

blow the music helps to walk a little faster but...

I was adrift
awaiting the kind of enlightenment
that comes from a temporary immersion
in another place
I dodged traffic
learnt to read a few more characters
and wondered if I could fit in
somehow
in a place like this.

i had a little (gravy) boat i dreamt of those individual microwaveable puddings that come...

i tried to tame it
i tried to help
i lay myself bare
i did things i never want
to do again
but i will
because once you know
how to do these things
you can’t un-know them
and when the meek
ask for help
one’s heart melts a little
and you feel
happy to be useful
even trivially so
for an hour or two
sometimes knowing something
so internally hateful
after so long
can bring joy
or at least
relief
to others.

trapped in amber days like these i feel encased dodging fellow pedestrians...

the ocean called my name
while gulls wheeled overhead
you know how it is
then the power flipped off
loud beeps screamed
somewhere nearby
and i remembered where i was
cramped in a tiny floating room
trying not to trip over things
working on some bogus idea
and wondering if i’d ever see
my loved ones again.
