my last few visits
to this town
always involved seeing
car parks at night
from afar
micro-cities of light
as the city darkened
around it.

I still haven’t quite grasped
the fascination with
corrugated concrete
though.

i spent a few days up north in conferenceville, staying a twenty minute walk away from a building of small rooms where I’d spend hours being talked at about popular ways to shift zeros and ones from one place to another.

there wasn’t time for much else – I never quite got the chance to visit an old favourite record shop, but leaving the overcrowded conference party early gave me the chance to walk home through the city at night.

when i got back home, at 11:45pm, i knew i’d finally succumbed to this year’s cold/flu, proving that it’s impossible to escape the inevitable.

staying at a hostel. The steady scrolling of morning lights as we approached,
a thump and a roar as we touched down. It’s all a bit hazy now as I stare
upwards from the hotel lobby, up past the floors and floors of rooms, toward
the skylight that reveals another blue sky day. A fleet of airline staff
surrounds me, chattering in indonesian, i think (why do I find this somehow
comforting?). The women sit and smoke whilst the captains stand and gesture
as they talk. I’ve turned my clocks forward while I wait for my room
and watch the lifts (they look like huge fuses) bobbing up and down.
